My Journey as a Surrogate

Met my IP's and our screening is all done

James and I flew out to NJ on Tuesday evening so that we'd be there nice and early for our "all day" screening at my IP's clinic (whom I will now refer to as M and A). My mom stayed with the kids at our house. We arrived in NJ at about 10pm and then got to the hotel (via shuttle van) at about 10:30. Our hotel was really nice! We got up bright and early for the continental breakfast which was awesome! They had an omlet station where this guy made us fresh omlets, and they also had a waffle station, bagels, cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit, coffee, and juices, etc.... It was by far the nicest "free" breakfast I've ever seen. After we ate we took a walk around outside because some people had said the clinic was within walking distance of the hotel. It was, but not a great idea if you have luggage with you (which we would since we'd be checking out and not returning to the hotel). So, we called a cab who came and got us and our stuff and took us to the clinic. We got there at about 10 min to 8am.

We went in and started to fill out paperwork (M and A were not there yet, but I was really anxious since it would be our first time meeting!). They had this personality assessment test that we had to take and it was 344 questions long! And the questions were so funny!! Well, we started filling those out when a nurse came and stole me away to get started on my medical testing. I had an intrauterine ultrasound and a physical done. On my way out from that as I was going to get James to have our blood drawn, I saw M and A sitting in the waiting room filling out their paperwork, so I went over to introduce myself. A and I hugged and made small talk about how James and I trip was going so far and M joked about all the paperwork we had to do.. it was really nice and not too terribly awkward. I noticed how pretty both of their eyes were. James was out in the cafe doing his papers so I went to get him for the blood draw. When we came back into the waiting room I introduced James to M and A. Finally we all got to see each other!

James and I had our blood drawn and peed in cups and then we went back to sit with M and A to keep working on our papers. The psychologist then took James and I to go have our session, which was much easier than I anticipated. She was really laid back and we got to sit on a couch (for some reason I was envisioning sitting at a big oval table with 2-3 doctors in lab coats drilling us.. LOL!!). It was a rather long session so we had to have a coffee break midway through and then she spoke with James and I each seperately. As each of us had our one on one session with her the other finished up their paperwork. We then had to meet with the nurse coordinator, who was a blast. She was really easy going and funny. She went over the whole process, the meds that I'd be on, and showed us how to do injections. We even got to practice on a fake piece of flesh LOL! She gave me BC pills (to be started that night!) since I'd just finished my period and that could get the process started. I can't start any injectible meds however until contracts are signed. She also hooked me up with a monitering clinic in my state where I'll be going for blood draws and ultrasounds while I'm cycling (taking meds). I also have to go in (possibly next week) for a saline ultrasound.

We wrapped up everything at the clinic pretty early so M and A and James and I were then left on our own to spend some time together before we had to get back to the airport! They drove (obviously since we didn't have a car) and they had a gift bag with goodies in it for us and the kids! They got each of the kids an outfit, and James and I NY hats. We were really touched that they had thought of the kids. We went out to lunch and I had spinach ravioli, YUM! The conversation flowed well and we all had a really great time at lunch. We talked about our jobs, school, the kids, etc... (thank goodness James has some really good Comcast stories so he had M and A cracking up). They were going to get us to the airport for an early flight back home since everything was done so early and my mom was really happy when she heard this (not because the kids were being bad LOL, but because she doesn't like driving in the dark and our original flight was a few hours later). I brought my camera and James took a couple pics of A and me outside of the restaurant. I was kicking myself for not having someone at the clinic not take a pic of all 4 of us together while we were there.

On our way to the airport we could see the NY skyline which was cool cause now we can say we saw NYC. LOL! When we got there, M parked curbside and we all got out and hugged and said our good byes. James and I did make it on the earlier flight. It was our first time flying standby so that was interesting. We didn't get to sit next to each other on the plane, but he did sit directly behind me.

The whole trip was so fast I still can't believe we've already done it! A called me on my cell just after we landed at O'hare to make sure we got back ok. She's such a sweetheart.

I can't wait to go back for the transfer and see them again! James and I are discussing possibly taking the kids too so I won't have to be away from them for so long. We'd be driving, so it'd be a cool little adventure for them. That way we can go and see the sights and have a good time without having to worry about rushing back home to the kids. If that's not feasible than I might have a friend fly out with me so that James can stay with the kids.

Well, the next step is working on contracts (I got my first copy the night we got back from NJ) and going in for my saline ultrasound!

We leave tomorrow!

I can't believe it's already time for me and James to go to NJ tomorrow!!! I am SO excited about meeting my IP's!! It's going to be a super short trip, leaving tomorrow afternoon and returning Wednesday evening. I wish I could spend some more time with them and see the sights in NY but we have to hurry back to the kids.

I don't know what to expect at the screening. I know we're having medical and psychological screening done.. hopefully they don't declare either of us crazy, LOL!

*Fingers crossed* that everything goes well! Then we can move on to contracts and once that's done, time to start meds. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 more hurdles down....

Yesterday I had my 2 phone pre-screens (medical and psychological). They were both really easy. The med. was about 5 min long and the psych. was about 20 min. Not bad at all!! Another really big hurdle that I didn't think would be so big, was that I finally got my insurance booklet my IP's lawyer requires. It took forever to get that darn thing! So many people had no clue what I was talking about at the insurance company... and then my husband's HR person didn't have any and she kept directing us to the insurance company.... sheesh. Well anyways I finally got it yesterday, so now we just have to wait for our all day screening in NJ. Less than 3 weeks away now. =D

I have a cold so I haven't been working out and I feel pretty sluggish. I'm hoping I feel better tomorrow so I can work out.
